Shaft Seal of Slurry Pump

Slurry pump has 3 main shaft seals. They are packing seal, expeller seal and mechanical seal.
- Packing seal is a very common one. It can prevent slurries from leakage by injecting seal water into filler. Usually packing seal is used in multistage tandem pump when expeller seal is not suitable. Packing seal has simplified structure, lower cost and is easy to maintain.
- Expeller seal prevents slurries from leakage by the reversed centrifugal force. When the inlet pressure value of single-stage slurry pump or the first stage of multi-stage slurry pump is not large than 10% of pump outlet pressure value, expeller seal can be used. No seal water is needed for expeller seal. It doesn’t dilute slurry and has a good sealing effect.
- Mechanical seal is used when highly effective sealing is needed. Industries like chemical and food usually apply mechanical seal because no extra ingredient is allowed to enter the pump. But mechanical seal has very high cost and is difficult to maintain.
