Slurry Pump Impeller

Naipu can supply you slurry pump impellers made of rubber or metal. The slurry pump’s impeller is an energy converter. It is the main rotating component of a slurry pump to impart and direct the centrifugal force to the slurry. The impeller vanes are the heart of the impeller. The rest of the impeller is to carry, protect and balance the impeller vanes during operation.

Slurry Pump Impeller type

The slurry pump impeller type can be open, semi-open, closed. Closed impellers have shrouds on both sides of the vanes, while open (or semi-open) impellers have only one shroud opposite the impeller entrance.

Advantages of the open impeller design:

  • 1. Possibility of machining the impeller surfaces which will increase efficiency of impellers;
  • 2. Blocking does not occur as easily as with the closed type;
  • 3. Wear on the bowl and impeller vane edge may be compensated by adjustment to bring clearance and thus efficiency back to normal.

Advantages of the closed impeller design:

  • 1. Axial thrust is reduced which may increase bearing life or allow a more economical shafting;
  • 2. Wear on the impeller vanes is not as critical for the adjustment of impeller/bowl clearance as with open impellers.

Semi-open impeller

Semi-open impellers are used to overcome the limitations of a closed design and depend on impeller diameter, size or structure of the solids, presence of entrained air, high viscosity, etc.

Naipu slurry pump impellers are more commonly of the closed type (with a front shroud), because of higher efficiencies and are less prone to wear in the front liner region.

The impeller design is crucial as it influences flow patterns and, ultimately, wear rates throughout the pump. Closed impellers are used for slurries with coarse particles for highest efficiency and best wear life–check maximum solids size. Open impellers are used for slurries with high viscosity, entrained air and when blockage problems can be foreseen.

Number of slurry pump impeller vanes

"More vanes give higher efficiency." This means that the more vanes there are, the higher efficiency will be, however, limitations exists as long wear life and the need to pass a required particle size have influence on the vane thickness.

The numbers of impeller vanes of Naipu slurry pumps usually vary between three and five depending on the size of the particles in the slurry.
